Vulcan Materials awarded Crosby Scholars $2,500 to support “College ROCKS” college and career readiness, which includes age-appropriate programming and mentoring in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) beginning in middle school and continuing through high school.

“Our existing programming prepares students for successful college enrollment,” Crosby Scholars President and CEO Mona Lovett said. “This funding will support additional resources and guidance to introduce our students to careers in STEM professions, which provide a living wage with only one salary.”

Funding will support a Career Exploration Fair in partnership with The Professional Center by Goodwill; field trips to Vulcan Materials and other STEM business sites; college visits; and professional STEM mentors/advising for senior high school students.

“Providing students with opportunities for career exploration will help students choose an education pathway that best aligns with their interests and skillsets,” says Martin Thorpe, Vulcan’s Mideast Division President.  “Vulcan is pleased to partner with Crosby Scholars in support of their ‘College ROCKS’ program and share many career opportunities within the company both locally and across our international footprint of over 375 communities.”

Crosby Scholars currently serve more than 11,600 middle and high school students in Forsyth County. About half of Crosby Scholars are from under-represented populations, and in 2019, 29 percent were first-generation college students. Crosby Scholars has a 100% graduation rate, and 98% of Crosby Scholars enroll in a 4- or 2-year college immediately after high school.

The free programming from 6^th to 12th grade builds a college-going culture early. Students attend classes in academic skills, leadership development, college admissions, SAT/ACT preparation and complete community service. Crosby Scholars has senior advisors, bi-lingual staff and provides direct financial aid counseling services to parents and students as they are making decisions about paying for college. Students who complete Crosby Scholars are eligible to apply for need-based Last Dollar Grants of up to $1,200 for up to four years.
