Jewel Moser: Finding Passion and Serving Others with the Help of Crosby Scholars

Jewel Moser credits the Crosby Scholars program with equipping her with the tools to navigate life-changing decisions, ultimately propelling her success. A graduate of Parkland IB Magnet High School and a senior at North Carolina A&T State University, Jewel is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Fashion Design and Merchandising, following her entrepreneurial spirit and passion for fashion and content creation.

Jewel participated in Crosby Scholars from 6th to 12th grade, where she learned valuable lessons that continue to impact her. "The program emphasized the importance of community and serving others," she says. This focus on service led Jewel to volunteer at organizations like Goodwill and the Bethesda Center for the Homeless, with a particularly impactful experience at a dance camp. "That's where I learned that when you love what you do, it's incredibly rewarding," Jewel reflects. "Serving my community is fulfilling when I'm doing something I genuinely enjoy." Today, she exemplifies this principle by teaching sewing through social media platforms.

The program also equipped Jewel with valuable decision-making skills. "Crosby Scholars taught me to stay prepared," she explains. "They helped me understand how to stay ahead of the curve and prepare for college." This included college visits, researching opportunities, and extensive discussions with her advisor about her future goals. The advisor helped her prioritize her needs while navigating her college choices.

Initially enrolled in marketing at NC A&T, Jewel experienced success, winning a case competition and even securing a patent opportunity. However, as a junior, she realized, "Marketing wasn't igniting my passion." Following her heart, she changed her major to Fashion Merchandising and Design. This bold move proved impactful: she secured an internship at Tory Burch, designed outfits for a Miss America contest, and landed a summer internship at Belk with a clothing line launch planned for March 2024.

"None of this would have been possible without the skills I gained from Crosby Scholars and their unwavering support," Jewel acknowledges. "I wouldn't be here without the opportunities they provided for students like me. I am incredibly grateful for their sponsorship, which not only helps students like me achieve our dreams but also strengthens the Winston-Salem community as a whole."
