What is the Crosby Scholars community service requirement?

Each Crosby Scholar must complete at least 2 hours of community service each school year. (Two hours are required, although five hours are recommended for high school students.) This service should be done at non-profit organizations or programs. This volunteer work can be fulfilled through church activities, scouts, school clubs or civic organizations.

If you completed the Crosby Scholars Program the previous school year - you may count summer volunteer hours towards the following school year's requirement.

Why participate in community service?

Community service/volunteering is a great way to get involved in your community by sharing your talents and skills with those around you. Our community - our neighborhoods, schools, city - is stronger and better when people reach out and lend a helping hand to those in need.

Volunteering is also a great way to learn more about yourself, your community and what you would like to do and the person you would like to be. For example, if you are interested in the medical profession, try volunteering at a nursing home or hospital to get an idea of your future career.

What are some ideas for community service?

  1. Help out one of your teachers at school.
    • Ask teachers if they could use your help during your lunch or after school. Your Guidance Office might have some projects that you can help with.
  2. Participate in a Walk-A-Thon.
    • Throughout the year, there are a number of local walk-a-thons that you can participate in. There are many local organizations with walk-a-thons; here are the names of a few: Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (October), Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (May), Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (April).
  3. Be a mentor/tutor.
    • There are many after-school programs that you could help out with by tutoring elementary students or being a mentor.
  4. Participate in club/church volunteer activities.
    • Students who volunteer with their scout troop or church youth group or other civic group are able to get involved in their community and work with a group.
  5. Help out at your former elementary school.
    • You can read to students or tutor them in their after school programs.
  6. Volunteer at a nursing home.
    • Senior adults love to interact with teens and there are many ways to do so in any of our local nursing homes, from adopting a grandparent to reading aloud.
  7. Here are some places where students have done community service:
    • Second Harvest Food Bank * Clemmons Fire Department * Crisis Control * Southside Public Library * Bethesda Center * Samaritan Ministries * Gateway YWCA * Kids Vote USA * Forsyth County Humane  Society * Juvenile Diabetes Foundation * Stratford Rotary Club * El Buen Pastor * West Forsyth YMCA* Habitat for Humanity
