Why Volunteer?
Volunteering is a great way to get involved in your community by
sharing your talents and skills with those around you. Our
community - our neighborhoods, schools, city - are stronger
and better when people reach out and lend a helping hand to
those in need. Crosby Scholars are committed to being active
citizens by volunteering at least 2 hours a year.
Volunteering is also a great way to learn more about yourself,
your community and what you would like to do and the person you
would like to be. For example, if you are interested in the
medical profession, try volunteering at a nursing home or hospital
to get an idea of your future career.
There are many ways you can get involved, try something new,
and be a:
VOLUNTEER!
Crosby Scholars Community Service Requirement
Each Crosby Scholar must complete at least 2 hours of community service.
This volunteer work can be fulfilled through church activities, scouts,
school clubs or civic organizations. The service should be done at
non-profit organization or programs. Community Service forms must be
submitted by the scheduled deadline each year.
Ideas for Community Service:
Help out one of your teachers at school.
Ask teachers if they could use your help during your lunch or after school.
Your Guidance Office might have some projects that you can help with.
Participate in a Walk-A-Thon.
Throughout the year, there are a number of local walk-a-thons that you
can participate in. There are many local organizations with walk-a-thons;
here are the names of a few:
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (October), Susan B. Komen Breast
Cancer Foundation (May), Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (April).
Be a mentor/tutor.
There are many after-school programs that you could help out with by
tutoring elementary students or being a mentor.
Help out at a day care center.
Many local day care centers could use a helping hand, especially
church day cares. They certainly appreciate having teens help out
with the youngest members.
Participate in club/church volunteer activities.
Students who volunteer with their scout troop or church youth group
or other civic group are able to get involved in their community and work
with a group.
Help out at your former elementary school.
You can read to students or tutor them in their after school programs.
Volunteer at a nursing home.
Senior adults love to interact with teens and there are many ways to do
so in any of our local nursing homes, from adopting a grandparent to reading aloud.
